How to care for a full artificial Christmas tree

The holiday season is here. If you’re like me, you’ve probably bought your Christmas tree and are ready to decorate it.

What better way to start the holiday season than by caring for your tree? Artificial Christmas trees will last longer if you take care of them properly. Here are some tips on how to care for an artificial Christmas tree:

Before You Put the Tree Up

  • Take the time before you put up your artificial Christmas tree to read all of the instructions that came with it so that you know how best to set up your new purchase. You may also want to check online reviews from other users who have bought this same product in order to get more information about how they placed theirs up and whether or not they had any problems with it falling apart or breaking during assembly.
  • Make sure that all of the parts are there when you open up your box and that nothing has been broken during shipping (this happens more often than you would think). If anything does seem out of place or missing, contact the company immediately so that they can send replacements as quickly as possible before you start putting everything together.

When you get your new tree home

  • Cut off about an inch from the base of the trunk using a sharp knife or pruning shears. This will allow water to flow freely through the trunk when you water it. You should also remove all plastic netting from around the bottom of the trunk before adding water.
  • To prevent mildew and mold from forming inside your artificial tree’s branches, place it away from heaters or air conditioners in a well-ventilated area with plenty of fresh air circulation. Never put an artificial tree near an open flame or direct heat source like a fireplace or wood burning stove.
  • Check the trunk of your artificial tree and remove any needles that are loose or dry. Don’t worry about the ones that have fallen on the floor — they’re impossible to clean up completely. If a needle falls off while you’re decorating your tree, just grab it before it gets dirty and throw it away.
  • If you want your fake tree to smell like real pine, sprinkle some water on its branches and add a few drops of pine essential oil before turning it back on after cleaning it.
  • Store your artificial tree in its original box (or another sealed container) during the rest of the year so that dust doesn’t settle on its surface or break down its fibers.
  • Just like real trees, they need water and sunlight. If you live in a dry climate, you may want to set your artificial Christmas tree on top of a tray filled with stones or pebbles to help keep the moisture level up.
  • The best way to water your artificial tree is with a spray bottle filled with warm water. You can use plain tap water (but not hot), but distilled or filtered water will help keep minerals from building up on the branches. Spray all surfaces of the tree equally; do not over-water since this can cause mold and mildew growth.
